Orville Peck’s Pony arrived in 2019 with no shortage of drama: There was, of course, the pseudonym and the trademark fringed mask, but above all, his tremulous croon spinning neo-traditional country tales with some subversive twists. This six-track coda—Peck’s debut on Columbia after exiting Sub Pop—is a step further into the limelight thanks in no small part to “Legends Never Die”, a much-anticipated duet with none other than Shania Twain. But it’s the EP’s closing track, a cover of Bobbie Gentry’s “Fancy”, that ambles into truly epic territory, setting the stage for whatever comes next.
